These trees will be located in the ponds of Sungei Durian – with a total area of 4ha – along the southern coast of the island, and the site will eventually be known as OCBC Mangrove Park.

Work is expected to be completed by 2026, and recreational opportunities at the site are expected to be available to the public.

OCBC will also grow an additional 1,000 saplings along the coastline as the park is being developed.

The total of 9,000 mangrove trees are expected to collectively capture and store up to 30 million kg of carbon dioxide in their lifetimes.

At the launch of the project on Saturday, National Development Minister Desmond Lee said the park will complement other nature-based solutions implemented by NParks to tackle climate change.

Examples include a coastal protection and mangrove restoration project on Pulau Tekong and the creation of a coastal belt in Kranji Coastal Nature Park.

Mr Lee said: “These solutions are important in mitigating climate change, and offer additional habitats for our biodiversity.”

Associate Professor Daniel Friess from the National University of Singapore said the mangroves at the OCBC Mangrove Park will take root via the Ecological Mangrove Restoration (EMR) method.

This involves filling the pond with sediment to increase its elevation base to allow mangrove propagules to settle in the soil, and creating “streams” to facilitate these seedlings flowing further inland.

This is important because the ponds now are completely flooded regardless of tide level, he said.

Prof Friess, who is a member of the Restore Ubin Mangroves Initiative, a group that advocates the restoration of mangrove sites on the island, added: “Everyone assumes that mangroves love the sea, that they need it, but it is actually a really stressful place… They’ve evolved over tens of millions of years just to tolerate the flooding.”

“What we are trying to do (with EMR) is create an environment where mangroves are above water just enough, right within their conditions where salt water is just within their tolerance,” he said.

Mr Lim Liang Jim, group director of conservation at NParks, said that apart from functioning as carbon sinks and coastal shields, the restored mangrove fields contribute to the protection of wildlife that reside within these habitats.

“Having a high biodiversity provides a full suite of elements that provide resilience against the impacts of climate change,” he said.

Ria Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09770926654830427210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-929851743205257324.post-61005671531786362172021-09-27T08:52:00.000+08:002021-09-27T08:52:10.456+08:00R.U.M.'s Sungei Durian project in the news!Minister Desmond Lee announced R.U.M.'s project as part of “nature-based solutions” to build the resilience of Singapore’s coastlines at Pulau Ubin, during the Festival of Biodiversity (Sep 2021).

R.U.M.'s work was decribed as a "mangrove restoration project at Sungei Durian, located along Pulau Ubin’s southern coastline."

Minister said: "We will be embarking on two new and more extensive coastal protection projects in Pulau Ubin. These will be carried out in partnership with the community: one at the northern coastline, and the other in the south, at Sungei Durian,"

"This will restore the island's coastlines and mangrove habitats, and bring back more of the island's rich biodiversity by addressing ongoing erosion and habitat loss."

"As for the southern coast of Ubin, NParks said it will be working with scientists, volunteers and marine conservation groups to assess how abandoned aquaculture ponds there can be made into richer mangrove habitats.

Even though the ponds have been fallow for years, mangrove has regenerated in only the shallower parts of the ponds, which can reach depths of 5m.NParks said possible strategies could include elevating the pond beds and improving water flow to ensure a steady supply of mangrove propagules (or young mangrove plants) from mature plants. "This will help produce a self-sustaining ecosystem," said NParks.

Further technical assessments, planning and detailed designs are ongoing, with plans to begin works in 2023.

New articles on this announcement
Straits Times article

Channel News Asia article and video clip

Ria Tanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09770926654830427210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-929851743205257324.post-39803847568814070712021-07-03T08:16:00.005+08:002021-09-27T09:02:54.813+08:007 Aug (Sat): "Doing Mangrove Restoration the Right Way" by Prof Dan FriessJoin this online talk by Prof Dan Friess who will share how to do mangrove restoration the right way!

This talk is part of a series in conjunction with the launch of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The R.U.M. team and NParks took this opportunity to share about Pulau Ubin's mangroves and the effort to restore them. As well as the important role of mangroves in mitigating climate change.

Here's Germaine sharing more about Ubin mangroves and restoration efforts. In the film, Prof Dan shares how he came to Singapore to study our mangroves. Singapore has 35 of the 60 species found globally.
In the film Prof Dan also shares how mangroves can mitigate climate change by storing carbon. In fact, mangroves are much better at this, they are super carbon storers, compared to other ecosystems! Here's the hardworking film crew among the mangroves at Ubin.
Meanwhile, here's a look back at what the RUMblers were up to at the end of the year: a clean up, supporting a Kampong Homecoming and sharing about R.U.M. at Clean and Green Singapore.

On 10 November, Lisa Lim led a super large group of 31 volunteers who cleared and removed 120 kg of marine trash/debris (of which 39 kg are abandoned fishing nets) around the mangrove area and shore along the coastline off our restoration site at Kg. Durian. Bravo!

In November, some RUMblers stepped up to support the great effort by Syazwan Majid to organise a homecoming for Ubin residents AND inviting the public to join in. There were kampong games, sharing kampong memories, kampong food and kampong photo booth! Learn more about his work on his Wan's Ubin Journal blog.

Thanks to NParks for the invitation to share about R.U.M. with the Prime Minister and other Ministers at Clean and Green Singapore in November. Thanks to Subaraj for making it so easy. And to Shamla Jeyarajah Subaraj for the awesome photos! And Azlin Sani for looking after us. More photos here.
Initiative.

'Ubin, Sayang' traces the journey of Xiao Ting as she learns from the stories of mangrove restoration and kampong living. In the context of modern Singaporean nostalgia for the kampong, the film brings together different perspectives on what the kampong spirit truly entails, and discusses its implications for us today.
Here's a glimpse at what we have been up to recently.

Mangrove clean up continues!

Lisa Lim and her stalwart volunteers from Nature Society did two cleanups involving a total of 50 volunteers who removed 230 kgs of trash from the R.U.M. restoration site at Jalan Durian. Launch of Ah Mah's Drinkstall

The RUMblers also came together to support the launch of the heritage wall at Ah Mah's Drinkstall. Organised by Singapore Heritage Society (SHS) and the NUS architecture team who rebuilt the stall, the launch was hosted by Minister Desmond. Supporting this event were volunteers from Sea Angel and R.U.M. We had fun sharing about mangroves.
