Share your feedback on the EIA and ideas for the OCBC Mangrove Park - Singapore’s first large-scale Ecological Mangrove Restoration project. First initiated by Restore Ubin Mangroves (R.U.M) Initiative!

In this news clip on Mediacorp Channel 8, Prof. Dan Friess talks about the importance of mangroves in protecting our shorelines and how they can help in mitigating the effects that come with sea level rise. Stephen Beng (Nature Society Singapore, Marine Conservation Group) briefly explains how and where mangroves can be restored. The reporter speaks Mandarin but the interview is in English.

Sea level rise is one of the things Singapore will have to deal with. This was one of the points on Climate Crisis made by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long during his National Day Rally Speech.

R.U.M. Scientific Workshop Day 2

Today, the first R.U.M. Scientific Workshop continues with lots of discussions among a wide range of experts.

Thanks to NParks for hosting the Workshop and to the more than 30 participants, some of whom took leave to attend! As well as the R.U.M. team who turned up to support. We also saw otters!

Today, a milestone as the first R.U.M. Scientific Workshop was held. Thanks to NParks for hosting the Workshop and to the more than 30 people who participated! As well as the R.U.M. team who turned up to support.

We spent Day 1 learning from mangrove experts, and visiting R.U.M. sites. We are excited for Day 2 when we will do restoration design!

How can we make Ubin's mangroves more appealing?

Everyone’s opinion matters to the R.U.M. team as we want to make mangroves more accessible for all after the restoration work is done. Thus, to find out what people’s current perceptions of mangroves are and how we can help to introduce mangroves to everyone, R.U.M. also conducted a short online survey to aid in designing the restoration work.

What do the villagers think of Restoring Ubin’s Mangroves?

To the R.U.M. team, it is vital to consider villagers’ views in designing mangrove restoration on Pulau Ubin. The villagers have intimate knowledge of mangroves and know what it was like in the past when mangroves were abundant. We want to gather their thoughts and ideas so these could be incorporated in the restoration project.

Mr Tiong (a fish farm owner on Ubin) who kindly let us interview him.

To find these out, Tessa Liu, R.U.M intern, interviewed Ubin villagers in December with the help of R.U.M volunteer Jared Moore (who is also a Master’s student with NUS Geography). They are grateful to Phillip Lim of Sea Angels and Mr Yong for introductions to villagers, and Sia Wanrong for introductions to the fishermen.

December RUMbles and beginning the next phase in restoration!

Volunteers of the Restore Ubin Mangroves (R.U.M.) Initiative ended the year with our last free monthly walks, and a good cleanup of Ubin mangroves.

Volunteers of R.U.M. (Restore Ubin’s Mangroves) are about to give Mother Nature a hand to replant mangroves in abandoned aquaculture ponds at Pulau Ubin.

To design the restoration, volunteers of R.U.M. would like to ask what YOU would like to see and do in mangroves at Ubin. So that the restored mangroves will be meaningful to you, your family and friends.

It is important to R.U.M. that the community have a say in mangrove restoration. Our hope is to restore Ubin mangroves not just ecologically and biologically, but also socially and culturally.

Exciting next step for R.U.M.!

Prof Dan Friess formally presented the results of mangrove mapping during the Friends of Ubin Network meeting earlier this month. This culminates months of hard work by the mapping team!

R.U.M. now looks forward to the exciting next step of designing the restoration. The design will be based on what the community wants to see and do in the restored mangroves.
